Hair Growth Rate

Naturally, hair grows between 0.5 and 1.7 cm per month, or 15 cm a year. But, you should consider that many factors affect its rate. For example, statistics shows that males have a higher hair growth rate than females. But, you need to understand that it wholly depends.

How fast or slow does your hair grow?

It is claimed that Africans have the lowest hair growth rate, whereas Asian hair grows fastest. However, besides race, the rate significantly depends on genetics, age, and health.

In summer, when people start changing their diets, eating more fruits and vegetables, and due to the hormonal changes, hair normally grows faster.

In conclusion, how long your hairs grows is an individual thing. Therefore, we can only figure out how fast an individual’s hair will grow roughly, not with certainty.

Stages of Hair Growth

Stages of Hair Growth

Have you ever wondered how hair grows and through what stages it goes?

Believe it or not, but hair growth cycle is more complex than you would ever imagine. Generally, so many studies are fully dedicated to its stages, and they analyze it in detail. Therefore, hair goes through four different stages before it grows completely and gets visible to our human eye.

So, what are those stages? Let’s cover them below, respectively:

  1. Anagen – a growing and the longest phase in the cycle. Generally, it lasts for about 3 to 5 years, but there are some exceptions, and for some people, it can take more than 7 years until it completes. However, the duration of this phase greatly depends on the type of hair. For example, hair on eyebrows lasts way shorter than on your head.
  2. Catagen or transition phase – starts when the anagen phases end and last for about 10 days. In the catagen phase, your hair starts growing slower, and the hair separates from the bottom part of hair follicles.
  3. Telogen or resting phase – naturally lasts roughly 3 months. Importantly, in this phase, neither your hair grows nor falls out. Instead, new hair starts forming into follicles in this period, and the old hair sheds.
  4. Exogen or shedding phase – generally represents the extension of the telogen phase. In the exogen phase, hair continues shedding (e.g. in pregnancy). It can last for 2 to 5 months, and you can lose 50 to 100 hairs every day. But don’t freak out because it’s normal.

How to Improve Hair Growth?

Generally, you cannot control everything that affects your hair growth. Because there are some birth-given factors that either you cannot monitor or improve, such as genes, race, age, gender, etc. However, it doesn’t mean that you have no control over your hair growth. Indeed, there are some tips and recommendations that you should take and implement those things into your life to enhance and fasten the process.

Check out those tips that improve and make your hair grow faster:

  • Do not choose too “restrictive” diets because it makes you avoid essential nutrients for hair growth.
  • Choose protein-rich food, at least 50g of proteins a day.
  • Include vitamins C, D, E, iron, and zinc in your meals.
  • Straighteners or hair dryers can greatly damage your hair. Thus, be careful with their usage and the temperature you set.
  • Coconut oil or aloe vera are two highly recommended hair enhancers.

How Often Should You Trim Your Hair?

We need to clear up some common misconceptions about haircuts to answer this question.

How Often Should You Trim Your Hair?

Important: Some people believe that the less frequently you trim (cut) your hair, the faster it grows. On the contrary, some people believe that you have to trim your hair every week or two to make it grow faster. However, both of these claims are wrong!

Statistics claim that delaying the haircut can cause more damage to your hair than trimming it regularly.

Giving you a good and clear perspective on how often you should trim your hair depends on the hair type. In other words, you shouldn’t have the same haircut frequency for short, long, medium-size hair, thick or thin hair, coarse or fine hair, etc.

For example, if you have short hair, it is recommended to trim it every month. Additionally, for medium-sized hair, every 6-8 weeks, those with long hair should cut it every 3-6 months.
