What is HbA1c?

Taking care of your health and testing your blood (bld) sugar by any method can trigger strong feelings. Be gentle with yourself and remind yourself that you are not a number. Be sure to have a support team to help you achieve the goals of your treatment plan, adjusting as needed without judgment.

An integral part of the bld is red bld cells, i.e., erythrocytes. Their constituent is the protein hemoglobin (Hgb). Glucose, which is in excess in the blood for a long time, sticks to this protein, and glycosylated Hgb – HbA1c is formed. Therefore, the more glucose (Glu) in the blood, the more glycosylated Hgb there will be.

The lifespan of erythrocytes is 120 days, after which new ones replace the old ones. Therefore, by measuring the concentration of HbA1c, it can be determined what the average concentration of Glu in the bld was in the last 8-12 weeks. In people without diabetes the average values range from 3.5% to 5.5%, and in people with diabetes values from 6.5 to 7.5% are considered satisfactory.

The HbA1c test is currently the best way to keep diabetes under control. When HbA1c is 7%, the average blood sugar (BG) is 6.5 mmol per l.

What is the estimated average glucose (eAG)?

Estimated average glucose is a way of translating A1c test results into terms that closely represent daily glucose (Glu) readings. It was introduced by the American Diabetes Association (ADA) in 2010 to help people with diabetes better understand how their A1c scores compare to their daily Glu readings.

Both the A1c test and the daily glucose reading provide useful information in the treatment of diabetes but are expressed in different ways. Daily Glu meter readings are a direct measurement of the amount of Glu in the bld at the time of sampling and are expressed as milligrams of Glu per deciliter of bld – for example, 154 mg/dl.

A1c also uses a blood sample but observes the percentage of hemoglobin, a protein in red bld cells, to which glucose (glycated hemoglobin) is bound. This reveals an individual’s average blood glucose level in the last two to three months. For example, an ac of 7% means that 7% of the total hemoglobin in the blood sample is glycated.

Most blood sugar glucose meters used for daily testing can average all readings over the last few weeks or months. This average is not the same as eAG. So even if you test your blood ten times a day or more, you will still find out how much Glu you have at that time.

The average that determines your Glu meter is likely to be lower than your eAG. This is because eAG represents the average of your Glu levels 24 hours a day and over a much longer period. Therefore, the eAG is more accurate.

By combining your eAG number with your average glucometer number, you get a valuable and comprehensive picture of your overall diabetes management. This will help you make healthy goals and choices to achieve proper Glu control.

The hemoglobin A1c test tells you your average level of BG over the past 2 to 3 months. It’s also called HbA1c, glycated hemoglobin test, and glycohemoglobin.

The sugar in your bld is called glucose. When Glu builds up in your bld, it binds to the Hgb in your red bld cells. The A1c test measures how much Glu is bound.

Red blood cells live for about three months, so the test shows the average level of Glu in your blood for the past three months.

If your Glu level have been high over recent weeks, your Hgb A1c test will be higher.

A bld glucose test taken at home measures your current blood glucose measured in milligrams per decilitre or millimoles per liter.

Milligrams per deciliter (mg/dl), used in the United States and Europe, measure glucose concentration as a ratio of weight to volume.

Millimoles per liter (mmol/l), used in the United Kingdom, measure glucose concentration as a ratio of molecules to volume.

A formula is used to convert the A1c score into a bld glucose score you’re used to seeing every day. This is called the eAG level.

Children under the age of 6 should have a blood glucose level of about 80 to 200 mg/dL every day. This range is considered healthy, and the amount of glucose in a child’s body will vary from when he wakes up after eating meals and again before bedtime. The normal value for eAG is between 70 mg/dl and 126 mg/dl (A1C: 4% to 6%). A person with diabetes should aim for an eAG less than 154 mg/dl (A1C < 7%) to lower the risk for diabetes complications.
