Gallons per Minute (GPM) – Definition
Gallons per minute, or GPM, is a measurement of how many gallons a pump can move each minute. Flow rate is another name for it. The Head is a measurement that relates to the height that the water must reach in order to be pushed through the units system. GPM is very dependent on this measurement. Flow rate is another name for it.
Showerhead GPM flow rates are regulated by the federal, state, and municipal governments because the potential for water and energy savings is enormous. According to one study, bathing is one of the most common ways we use water in the house, accounting for about 17 percent of residential indoor water consumption – or nearly 40 gallons per day for the average family. The United States uses about 1.2 trillion gallons of water per year just for showering.
When it comes to a head measurement, there are a variety of dimensions to consider, including:
- Total head: The fluid’s discharge point.
- The distance between the fluid source and the pump is known as the total suction head.
- The distance between the pump and the highest point to which the fluid will be pushed is known as the total discharge head.
How to Calculate Gallons Per Minute?
We can calculate the GPM by dividing 60 by the time it takes to fill a one-gallon container. So, if you fill a gallon container in 10 seconds, your GPM measurement is 6 GPM (60/10 seconds = 6 GPM). The pressure tank technique and formula are the most precise for calculating GPM.
You’ll need to know your pressure tank’s characteristics for this calculation, such as the number of gallons it contains, the gallon drawdown, and the PSI. The manufacturer specifies the gallon drawdown. Follow these procedures after you have the information and a stopwatch to keep track of time:
- Remove the pressure tank and empty it;
- When you hear the pressure switch turn on, start your stopwatch;
- When the switch is turned off, stop the stopwatch;
- Divide the length of time on your stopwatch by the amount of drawdown.
Your GPM rate would be five if the pressure switch took four minutes to turn off and you had a 20-gallon depletion. What is important is that if you don’t have access to a pressure tank, you need to fill maybe a bucket or any other container with water, time how long it takes to fill it, then divides the time by the capacity of the container.
Gallons per Minute Formula
GPM indicates a pump’s distinct capabilities, so you can choose the best one for your needs. For example, if you require a pump for a bigger public area like a golf course, marina, or lake, you’ll need one with a considerably greater GPM than you’ll need for your home’s well.
Furthermore, selecting the right pump is critical for lowering expenses and extending the life of your pump. In essence, you only need to enter any two variables you are familiar with, and the GPM calculator will calculate the third. Finally, we utilize the GPM calculation to figure out how many GPM are flowing:
GPM = \frac {Volume} {Time}
GPM to LPM and Other Units
Liters per minute (l/min) is abbreviated as LPM. It is a measurement of the velocity at which air flows into the sample probe when employed in the context of a particle counter’s flow rate. For example, assume you wish to convert the volume of 15 GPM to LPM (gallons per minute to liters per minute).
First, you need to check out the flow rate unit is set to gallons per minute before entering the number. Then, change the unit to liters per minute after that. Then, the number in the Flow rate field will be converted using the GPM calculator.

Gallons per Minute Calculator (GPM) – Example
Let’s take an example. It takes 5 seconds for the one gallon container to fill. Therefore, the volume of 60 gallons per minute divided by 5 is 12 gallons per minute. To calculate GPM with a bigger container, multiply the capacity in gallons by the number of seconds required to fill the container, then multiply by 60.
GPM = \frac {Container size in gallons} {Seconds to fill container } \times 60
Using a volume of 5 gallon container as an example, filling the container takes 14 seconds. As a result, 5 divided by 14 and multiplied by 60 yields a 21.4 GPM.
