A lot of pet food companies will tell you that their food is 70% protein or 35% protein, but what they likely mean is that their food contains 70% or 35% less moisture. The problem with this is that when comparing different products, it’s not uncommon to see two foods with the same amount of protein in them but drastically different calorie counts—this is because one of them may contain more fiber than the other. So how do you know which product has more meat and less filler? The solution lies in using a dry matter basis (DM) instead—which basically means taking out all the water from your pet’s diet before making any comparisons!
