What is BAI? – Body adiposity index

The body fat index defines the total body mass consisting only of adipose tissue. BAI is calculated without using bodyweight instead of body mass index (BMI). Instead, use the size of your hips compared to a person’s height. Based on population studies, BAI is approximately equal to the body fat percentage for adult men and women of different nationalities. BAI provides a straightforward approach to measuring body fat percentage.

BAI calculator

A body mass index requires body weight, while BAI only requires height and girth of the hips.

BAI is calculated as:

BAI = (HC / (HM)1.5) – 18

Where :

BAI = Body Adiposity Index
HM = Height in Metres
HC = Hip Circumference in Centimetres

To calculate the circumference of the hips, it is necessary to stand upright in a relaxed position and keep your feet as close to each other as possible. The measuring tape is the best tool for measuring the circumference around the hips.

Calculate the body fat percentage

You need height and hip circumference to calculate body fat.
We will give the example of a girl who is 172 cm tall and has a waist circumference of 98 cm :

Height: 172 cm
Hip circumference: 98 cm
And the result is :
BAI: 25,4%

The body fat formula shows that 25% of this girl’s body weight is fat.

The percentage of body fat is within acceptable limits. However, there is a possibility that this girl can further improve her health by taking a regular exercise regimen.
Exercise keeps you young with mind and body and is a great de-stressor. In addition, it prevents high blood pressure and diabetes.
Below you will find the BAI classification table that will help you understand whether, according to this calculation, you are considered obese, healthy or underweight.

The picture below shows that the healthy range depends on age, but it is 21 – 36% for women, and men 12 – 25%.

Healthy body fat ranges for adults

This way, you will determine if you already have a healthy percentage of body fat. If your body fat percentage exceeds the healthy range indicated, you may want to work on it. Leading a healthy life is very important, and fat deposits are unhealthy.

Bad fats can cause many diseases, while on the other hand, there are good fats that protect your brain and heart. Some healthy fats, such as omega 3, are essential for physical and even emotional health. Including more healthy fats in your diet helps improve mood and well-being, not just narrowing the waist.

Difference between Adiposity and Obesity

Both fat and obesity indicate the presence of excess fat in the body. In addition, fats and obesity identify people at high risk for developing health problems caused by excess body fat. Fat and obesity are usually measured using BMI or body mass index. This body mass index calculation uses weight and height. You can also use our BMI Calculator. The trick is to divide your weight in kilograms with your height square in meters.

For example, if you weigh 58 kg and your height is 1.6 meters, the calculation is 58 / 1.6 x 1.6, so the results are 22.65.

The distribution of body mass index is as follows:

  • <18.5 including the category of malnourished
  • 18.5 to <25, including the normal category.
  • 25 to <30 are in the category of excess weight or fat.
  • 30 is categorized as obese.

Obesity is further divided into:

  • Obesity class 1: body mass index between 30 and <35
  • Class 2: body mass index from 35 to <40
  • 3. degree of obesity; body mass index above number 40. Obesity is commonly referred to as extreme obesity or severe obesity.

Adiposity and obesity

All in all, both fats are detrimental to your health because both are excess. But if it is related to the amount of fat in the body, obesity is more dangerous than fat due to higher body fat levels. But try to see where your fat is stored. Although you do not include obesity, if you have a lot of fat in the stomach, the risk of developing various types of degenerative diseases is increasing. Belly fat is more dangerous than fat found in the hips or other body parts.
The easiest way to measure belly fat accumulation is to measure waist circumference. It is recommended that women’s waist circumference does not exceed 80 cm, while for men, it does not exceed 90 cm.

FAQ

How do you calculate adiposity?

BAI = (HC / (HM)1.5) – 18
Divide your hip circumference (in cm) by your height (in m) raised to the power of 1.5, and then subtract 18.

What is normal BAI?

BAI estimates of per cent body fat in the current study ranged from 13% to 45% among men and from 16% to 60% among women.

Is BAI better than BMI?

Preliminary investigations show that body adiposity index is a better marker of body fat than body mass index.

What is adiposity rebound?

The adiposity rebound is the second rise in body mass index between 3 and 7 years. Early age at adiposity rebound is a risk factor for later obesity.
